In early May, the ibex in the Bergamo Orobie mountains are about to leave their low-lying pastures and move up to higher altitudes to cope with the impending rise in temperatures. They’re already shedding their fur to cope with the summer season, and it’s becoming harder to spot them. So I decide to spend the night in a mountain hut to see them at sunset, when they become more active and aren’t disturbed by tourists. My patience pays off; here are the photos from the photo session.

Primi di Maggio, sulle Orobie Bergamasche gli stambecchi stanno per lasciare i pascoli a bassa quota raggiungendo maggiori altitudini, per far fronte all’imminente aumento della temperatura. Stanno gia cambiando il pelo per fronteggiare la stagione estiva, e diventa piu difficile avvistarli. Decido quindi di passare la notte in un rifugio per vederli al tramonto, quando diventano più attivi e non sono disturbati dai turisti. La mia pazienza viene ripagata, ecco gli scatti frutto della sessione fotografica.

I’ve long wanted to photograph the courtship ritual of Great Crested Grebes, which I’ve always found spectacular and fascinating. I arrived at Lake Garda a day early, in the afternoon, with my bicycle in the trunk. I unloaded it immediately and began riding along the lakeside until I found a promising area, where I saw several very active pairs of great crested grebes. I took a few initial test shots, but the real results didn’t come until the next day, when I spent the entire day in the field from dawn to dusk. The courtship rituals of Great Crested Grebes are very curious: the male and female face each other, performing a sort of dance, and then performing a ballet on the water, showing each other the algae they’ve gathered. In addition to the courtship display, I managed to photograph several fight scenes between rival pairs!

Da molto tempo desideravo fotografare il rituale di corteggiamento tra gli Svassi Maggiori, che ho sempre trovato spettacolare ed affascinante. Arrivo al Lago di Garda con un giorno di anticipo, nel pomeriggio, con la bicicletta nel baule. La scarico subito e incomincio a muovermi sul lungolago fino a quando non trovo una zona promettente, dove vedo diverse coppie di svassi molto attive. Faccio qualche primo scatto di prova, ma il risultato vero e proprio lo ottengo solo il giorno successivo, passandolo tutto sul campo dall’alba al tramonto. I rituali di cortaggiamento degli Svassi Maggiori sono molto curiosi: il maschio e la femmina si fronteggiano esibendosi in una sorta di danza, per poi esibirsi in un balletto sull’acqua mostrandosi a vicenda le alghe raccolte. Oltre al corteggiamento, sono riuscito a fotografare diverse scene di combattimento tra coppie rivali!

Despite numerous mountain excursions, I still haven’t captured a proper photograph of the chamois, one of the symbols of our Alps. I want to photograph it in winter, with snow in the background, as it struggles to survive against the cold. I choose the Gran Paradiso National Park as my destination, arriving as usual the evening before, and setting off to explore the next morning with a friend. I see only one individual at the bottom of the valley, then I begin to climb in altitude, and just before sunset, I finally manage to snap these shots of several individuals silently wandering through the forest, searching for something to eat amidst the snow that covers everything.

Nonostante le numerose gite in montagna, ancora non ho fotografato come si deve il camoscio, uno dei simboli delle nostre alpi. Voglio fotografarlo in inverno, con la neve sullo sfondo, quando lotta contro il freddo per la sopravvivenza. Scelgo come destinazione il Parco del Gran Paradiso, arrivo sul posto come al solito la sera prima, e parto in esplorazione la mattina successiva con un amico. Vedo solo un esemplare a fondovalle, poi inizio a salire di quota e poco prima del tramonto, riesco finalmente a fare questi scatti di un diversi esemplari che si aggirano silenziosi nel bosco, cercando qualcosa da mangiare tra la neve che ricopre ogni cosa

A light snowfall provides the background for this photo session in the heart of the Orobic Alps, in search of ibex. January is particularly ideal, as these animals descend into the valleys in search of grass to feed on. Occasionally, you can witness battles between the more active individuals.

Una lieve nevicata è lo scenario di questa sessione fotografica nel cuore delle alpi orobiche, alla ricerca dello stambecco. Il mese di gennaio è particolarmente indicato perchè questi animali scendono a valle alla ricerca di erba di cui nutrirsi facilmente. Di tanto in tanto, è possibile assistere a sfide tra gli esemplari più attivi.

On a cold November morning, the Val di Mello shows itself in all its charm, among frosted grass, bodies of water that reflect the mountains, and old houses that try to resist the grip of the frost.

In una fredda mattina di Novembre la Val di Mello si mostra in tutto il suo fascino, tra erba brinata, specchi d’acqua che riflettono le montagne, e vecchie case che tentano di resistere alla morsa del gelo.

In the heart of the Bergamo Orobie Alps, in the area of Valbondione, a steep walk through the woods leads to the hamlet of Maslana. Located in the Seriana Valley, it is the starting point for several hikes, one of which leads to the foot of the famous Serio Waterfalls. These falls give rise to the river of the same name, which originates here and flows across the Po Valley until it joins the larger Adda River.

Nel cuore delle Orobie Bergamasche, in località Valbondione, una ripida passeggiata nel bosco porta al borgo di Maslana. Situato nella val Seriana, è il punto di partenza di diverse passeggiate, una delle quali porta ai piedi delle famigerate cascate del Serio, che danno origine all’omonimo fiume che da qui nasce, ed attraversa la pianura padana fino a congiungersi col più grande fiume Adda.
